How is it carried out?

Pipe insulation is carried out at the factory when new structures are produced, but if necessary, after installation: to eliminate damage or as part of a major overhaul. The type, thickness, and other characteristics of the material are selected based on the surrounding conditions & the type of installation of communications (underground, above-ground). More often, bituminous mastics and polymers are used to protect gas pipelines.

In the case of insulation in the field, access to some sections of pipes (for example, when insulating an underground gas pipeline) may be limited, so the work is carried out with the help of special automated devices. In rare cases, the manual method is used: for example, to work with small areas and joints.

Preparation of the pipe for insulation includes:

  1. Cleaning the surface from corrosion and contamination. For this purpose, pipe-cleaning equipment and special tools are used.
  2. Gas pipeline priming. A thin layer of primer (about 0.1 mm) is applied to the pipes, then they wait for it to harden completely.
  3. Application of an insulating layer. For effective insulation, hot bituminous mastic is used, which is applied in several layers: their number depends on the requirements of the system.
  4. Wrapping with film. The pipe, covered with insulation material, is tightly wrapped with a film, and carefully watched to ensure that there are no wrinkles on the surface.
  5. Measurement of coating indicators: density, thickness, etc. For this purpose, measuring devices are used: flaw detectors, and thickness gauges.

Materials Used

The choice of material for pipe insulation determines the operating conditions and the method of installation of the gas pipeline. For example, to protect above-ground systems, the surface is primed twice, and then painted with enamel or paint in several layers. When laid in seawater, they provide enhanced protection: the main insulating layer is covered with concrete.

Two types of coatings are used to protect underground pipelines: polymers and bituminous mastics. The most reliable and versatile type of polymer for the insulation of gas pipelines is extruded polyethylene. Features:

  • suitable for pipes with a diameter of 5.7 to 14.20 cm, a length of up to 12.4 m;
  • forms a strong, uniform coating, adheres tightly to metal;
